Nordland is located along the northwestern coastline of the Scandinavian peninsula in Northern Norway. Because of the large range to the largely populated parts of Europe, this is one of the least polluted areas in Europe.
Nordland extends about 500 km from Trøndelag to Troms. The distance by roadway from Bindal in the far south of the region to Andenes on the northern tip is about 800 km. Nordland has a rugged coastline, with many arms. From south to north, the main fjords are Bindalsfjord, Vefsnfjord, Ranfjord, Saltfjord-Skjerstadfjord, Folda, Tysfjord, Ofotfjord (the longest) as well as Andfjord, which is shown to Troms area. The best-known is possibly the Vestfjorden, which is not actually a fjord, yet an open stretch of sea between the Lofoten island group and the mainland.
The Raftsundet strait, with its popular branch Trollfjord, is the quickest river connecting Lofoten as well as Vesterålen. The continental shelf is very slim west of Andenes, nowhere else in Norway is the deep ocean just a few kilometers from coast. Saltstraumen whirlpool is just southeast of Bodø, and Moskenstraumen is located in southern Lofoten.
Most of the populace is located at the Strandflaten bog. Berg in Sømna. Steep mountains near the sea and an almost level lowland location in between the mountains and the sea (Strandflaten, seaside border) is very typical for the long coast in Nordland, as well as Strandflaten typically proceeds out from the shore, the result is numerous islands (skerries), of which Helgeland have thousands; these islands are usually mountainous, however with smaller or larger strandflate areas.
